  1. Always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction
  2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
  3. Always keep the action open and the firearm unloaded until ready to use
  4. Know how the firearm operates
  5. Be sure your firearm and ammunition are compatible
  6. Carry only one caliber or gauge of ammunition when shooting
  7. Be sure of your target and what is beyond
  8. Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate
  9. Don't mix alcohol or drugs with shooting
  10. Be aware that circumstances may require additional rules unique to a particular situation

Firearm License Classes
  • Class A- permits the ownership and carrying of large capacity handguns, rifles, shotguns, and feeding devices
  • Class B- permits owning, but not the carrying, of large capacity rifles and shotguns and non-large capacity handguns
  • FID- permits owning of non-large capacity rifles and shotguns, but no ownership of handguns

The Massachusetts Home Firearm Safety Course is required for all residents of Massachusetts who wish to obtain a Class A, Class B, or FID Firearms License.  Anyone is eligible to take the safety course provided they are 15 1/2 years old and eligible to obtain a firearms license. Inorder to obtain a license, in general(and additional circumstances may apply), your record must be free of felonies and domestic abuse orders (209A).  Also if you have been convicted of drunk driving from 1994 to the present, you will only be eligible to apply for a FID license 5 years after you have served out the sentence you were given. (IE: convicted in 2000, 2 year suspended sentence, you may apply in 2007)
